This week is Pet ID Week, a time for pet owners to take the time to make sure their pets are wearing ID tags. The reason we’re highlighting this particular aspect of keeping your pet safe is because it’s critical to keeping your dog or cat from becoming lost. It’s also important because, if they do become lost, this tag can help reunite them with you faster than if they don’t have one!
Benefits of Pet IDs
One of the best reasons to license your pet is that it helps identify them as members of your family. In case of an emergency, having an ID on your dog or cat can save their life by providing information about their medical history, allergies and other important details.
Another benefit is that licensing helps protect pets from being stolen or lost by animal control officers who may mistake them for strays if they don’t have proper identification. If you’ve ever seen those signs asking people not to steal someone else’s dog (or cat), then this should make sense!
Also keep in mind that not all municipalities allow cats within city limits without proof from a veterinarian stating that the cat has been vaccinated against rabies at least once since its first birthday. This means having an up-to-date license could save money because fines start at $300 per animal in some states!
Check the expiration date on your current license
Look at the expiration date on your current license. If it is expired, you need to renew it.
It’s easy! To renew your pet’s license:
- Contact your local animal control agency and ask about their renewal process. They will give you a form to fill out, which may require some information from their records (like breed and weight) in order to verify that they have the correct information on file already.
- Mail or drop off this completed form along with payment (typically $10-$20 depending on where you live). You should receive confirmation that everything has been processed within 2 weeks of receipt by mail; if not, contact them again!
Northern Virginia Pet ID Regulations
If you are a resident of Northern Virginia and own a pet, there are certain laws that apply to you. The first thing to know is what is required when it comes to licensing your dog or cat. There are several municipalities within the area that require dogs over four months old be licensed, including Manassas, Centreville and Clifton.
Fairfax Station requires all cats over six months old be licensed as well (regardless if they have been spayed/neutered). It is important to note that these regulations apply even if you move into one of these municipalities from outside the area–you must license your animal within 30 days upon moving here!
You will need proof of vaccinations and neutering/spaying in order for us at Pet Licensing Headquarters to issue your new license(s). Failure to do so can result in a $250 fine per animal! To avoid this unpleasant situation we recommend getting everything squared away before bringing home any new pets into your family unit so there aren’t any surprises down the road!
